CITY SPOTLIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP

(For ages 14 - 19)

This internship includes acting training, cultivating an ensemble, teaching Fun Friday workshops and participating in Master Classes focused on professional development and job readiness skills. In the fall, create an original performance piece based on individual and collective stories that will feature four Boston neighborhoods. In the spring, join a Neighborhood Ensemble to further examine personal stories and the stories of residents from a City Spotlights featured neighborhood and perform with the Ensemble on the Shubert Theatre stage as part of City Spotlights. In April, participants will also lead Interactive Performance Workshops in and around Boston neighborhoods. Both fall and spring session participants receive a small stipend for their work in this program.

CITY SPOTLIGHTS SPRING NEIGHBORHOOD ENSEMBLES

(For ages 9 - Adult)

March 23 - May 16
Wednesdays and Thursdays

Showcase Performance: Saturday, May 16, 7:00 pm

Explore personal stories and the stories of community members from the City Spotlights featured neighborhoods through performance. Help to create an original performance piece based on an examination of individual and community identities to perform on Saturday, May 16 at The Shubert Theatre.

FUN FRIDAYS

(For ages 11 - 13)

Hosted by our City Spotlights High School interns, enjoy an evening of theatre games, improvisation and performing arts fun. Dinner will be served and space is limited. First come, first-served basis. Groups are invited to attend as well!

MASTER CLASSES

(For ages 14 - 19)

In these intensives, participants will learn skills to become more professional in the arts and beyond. Topics can include: movement for actors, building a resume, auditioning and interviewing.

INTERACTIVE PERFORMANCE WORKSHOPS

(For ages 9 - Adult)
April 21 - April 24

Attend a free, one-session Interactive Performance Workshop during City Spotlights focusing on personal stories and Boston neighborhoods. These workshops take place at Community Partner sites and other organizations in and around Boston.

CELEBRATE MUSICAL THEATRE

STORY SATURDAYS

(For ages 7 - 11)

1:00 - 3:00 pm
Location: Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, 38 Ash Street, Boston

In collaboration with Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, the Education Department will present Dr. Seuss inspired Saturday workshops. Topics will range from storytelling, creative costume-making, visual art, movement, improvisation and acting. Each workshop will culminate in a short final sharing for all participants. Space is limited.

BRIDGING THE GAP

(For ages 14 - Adult)

June 2009 for 2 weeks

Inspired by The Color Purple, teen participants will partner with elders from Boston communities to learn each otherŐs stories. Be a part of the artistic alchemy when intergenerational stories collide - experience what happens to stories as theyŐre passed down from generations through oral history, traditional expression and honoring family memories. After interviewing each other, participants will create an original piece and perform each otherŐs stories through a showcase for family and friends.

SING OUT LOUD
HIGH SCHOOL INTERNSHIP

(For ages 14 - 19)
July 7 - July 31, 2009

In this multi-session musical theatre intensive, participants will explore performance skills, voice training and projection, dance for theatre and develop their leadership and mentorship skills. Focusing on current and classic pieces from the musical theatre canon, participants will create an original performance piece, become familiar with musicals and their universal themes and share their knowledge with the community through teaching internships and leading Interactive Performance Workshops. Work will be focused on expanding vocal range, fundamental music skills, and song interpretation using different acting techniques. Participants receive a small stipend for their work in this program. The program will culminate in a final showcase performance.

SING OUT LOUD
ACTING WORKSHOPS

(For ages 10 - 13)
July 7 - July 31, 2009

In these multi-session musical theatre workshops that take place in partnering neighborhoods, participants will learn just how exciting the world of musical theatre can be. Through theatre games, ensemble building, voice work and dance, participants will create an original story and become familiar with musicals and their universal themes. Come and join us to sharpen all your "triple-threat" skills! Participants must be able to attend all sessions. These programs are suitable for participants of all levels, including beginners. This program will culminate in a final showcase performance.
