Nancy Willard was born on June 26, 1936, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was educated at the University of Michigan and Stanford University. Willard is the author of twelve books of poetry, including Water Walker which was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award. She has also written two novels, and four books of stories and essays. She lives in New York.
